Date Palm is a tree that can grow between 15m to 25m high and live up to 150 years old.The fruit contains about 58 percent sugar, protein, fat, and minerals. Fresh dates can be yellow, red, green, or orange and it turned dark brown when it dried. Dates were and still remain a much-valued symbol of hospitality and a very popular food in the Emirates.
Fresh dates compose of soft easily digestible flesh and simple sugars like fructose and dextrose could replenish energy and revitalize the body instantly. It makes it the best to be served to break fast during Ramadan month since ancient times.
The usefullness of date palm not only depend on the fruit but the whole tree. The seed can be an alternative for coffee. The oil also rich in several fatty acids which are used in soap and cosmetics.
The terminal bud and young date leaves, which are rich in phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen and ash, can be turned into salad or cooked as a vegetable dish.
The trunk and the sturdy midribs of the leaves are used to make crates and furniture. The leaves are woven into baskets. Date cluster stalks are made into rope or burned for fuel, and the fiber makes good packing material. The sap is drinkable. It can also be boiled down to make palm-sugar candy
